Ricardo Urbina

I AM DIFFERENT

I am different is a reflection on the experiences of a brown, migrant, non-conformist and non-binary person in the world of ballet. Ricardo Urbina redefines the traditional pas de deux of ballet and breaks up the traditional division of roles. Inspired by a muxe, considered Mexico's third gender, this project offers a space to tell their own stories. Muxe break the binary with a rich cultural heritage that dates back to pre-colonisation times.

Ricardo Urbina

Ricardo Urbina is a dancer and artist from Torreón, Mexico. After training at the Idyllwild Arts Academy in California and graduating with the ‘John and Lilian Outstanding Artist Award’, Ricardo moved to the Hamburg Ballet School in 2015. This was followed by engagements with the Bundesjugendballett under Kevin Haigen and numerous works with choreographers such as Marco Goecke, Wubkje Kuindersma and Demis Volpi.

Ricardo was a member of the Hamburg Ballet until 2023 and then moved to Ballett Kiel as a soloist. In addition to solo and leading roles, Ricardo choreographed his own pieces such as Elementos and Waiting for the Rain. Ricardo currently lives in Hamburg and is artistically and organisationally active in the House of Brownies collective.
