#ONETHUMEDBANDIT – PERFORMATIVE COLLECTIONS ON TIKTOK
TikTok is a rapidly growing social media platform that specializes in dance and other practices from the performative arts. Sebastian Matthias’s artistic research project #onethumbedbandit as a Performative Collection of TikTok videos tries to make transparent some of the cultural transformations triggered by TikTok performances as part of the project Participatory Art Based Research which is similar to the gambling machine the “One Armed Bandits”. TikTok also tries to identify human weaknesses or to use physiological mechanisms to influence perception and keep users on the platform. How can this bandit be disarmed? An understanding of TikTok’s strategies can provide insight into the challenges of digital culture.
